What We Do...

A Small Local Charity with Big Plans

Sundowns is a small, family-led charity with big plans for the future.

We are undergoing an exciting transformation to expand and strengthen what we do – developing new projects, partnerships and training to support children, young people and adults with Down syndrome across Wirral.

Everything we do is shaped by families and focused on inclusion, communication and opportunity.

Whether it’s supporting parents in the early years, helping children thrive at school, or creating new pathways into adult life, Sundowns is here every step of the way.

Early Years

Our early years support begins from the very start of a family’s journey.
We provide information, reassurance and connection for parents following a diagnosis, and offer our Signing for Babies sessions every week during term time.
These classes introduce Makaton signing through songs and play, helping children develop communication skills and confidence while parents connect and share experiences.

We are currently developing a “Get Ready for School” project to help children build early skills in communication, learning and independence, and to support families through the transition to nursery and school.

School Age

Sundowns works closely with local schools and families to make sure every child with Down syndrome has the right support to thrive.

We are becoming a delivery partner for Learn and Thrive’s “Teach Me Too” programme, offering educational sessions that build language, literacy and numeracy skills.

We also provide advice and training for teachers and parents, helping schools embed effective communication strategies, including Makaton, in everyday learning.

Secondary and Transition

The move to secondary school and beyond can be a challenging time for families.

We help by working directly with schools, parents and young people to plan support around communication, friendships, independence and future pathways.

Through partnership with Learn and Thrive’s “Learning for Life” programme, we help young people gain vital life skills and prepare for adulthood.

We also offer opportunities for social connection through discos, day trips and events – making sure that fun and friendship remain part of every stage of life.

“It's brilliant to connect with others going through a similar journey, gaining advice and reassurance.”

Adulthood and Employment

We are developing new opportunities for adults with Down syndrome.

Our goal is to create day provision in Wirral that offers performing arts, creative learning and life skills programmes, leading to greater confidence, independence and joy.

We also work with the Down’s Syndrome Association’s WorkFit programme to improve access to employment and training locally, helping adults find meaningful roles and reach their personal goals.

Makaton and Communication

Communication is at the heart of everything we do.

Sundowns is training an in-house Makaton Tutor, including one of our service users, to deliver high-quality training for parents, schools, professionals and community groups.

Community, Advocacy and Inclusion

We campaign for better understanding and inclusion of people with Down syndrome in all areas of life.

We work with local authorities, schools, and health and social care services to improve access, support and opportunities.

Our families also play an active role in national advocacy, including encouraging local MPs to join the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Down Syndrome.

Social Activities

Friendship and fun are central to Sundowns.

We run regular discos, family days, bowling evenings, and day trips, providing opportunities for people of all ages to socialise, celebrate achievements and enjoy being part of the Sundowns community.
